In March 2004, the very first volunteer canine search and rescue unit in Newfoundland, K9SARNL was founded by Herbert Schuhemacher, Bettina Lori, and Lisa Giroux in Western Newfoundland. We have several dogs certified for Air Scenting at this time and will soon be tested by the RCMP in tracking. If you are interested in becoming part of our group, see the team website or contact me via email. Ground Search and Rescue Ground SAR teams exist in nearly every region of Newfoundland & Labrador under the provincial blanket of the Newfoundland and Labrador Search and Rescue Association. There are currently 27 active teams on the island. Teams are called out by the RNC, RCMP, and Parks Canada when necessary. Team members are trained in all the necessary skills and you don't have to have any sparkling resume in order to become a member. People who participate learn first aid, woods skills, search techniques, map and compass, and various other special skills necessary to professionally aid law enforcement in the search for lost or missing persons. If you wish to find out if there is a team in your area, your best bet is to call the local RNC or RCMP office to obtain contact information.
